Sources of Traffic

For those of you who didn’t already know, high rankings mean more visitors first, and more clicks to the website in question. However, there are other sources of traffic as well. We take a look at some of these:

Search Engine Traffic

This traffic results from the user typing in a search term into a search engine such as Google or Yahoo. The resultant search engine results page (SERP) provides the user a list of relevant websites to visit. The user can then choose one or more websites. It is well known fact that users visit the top results first.

Type-in Traffic

This type of traffic results in users typing in the website name in the browser. For this to occur, the users must be aware of the website address and must also feel a need to visit it. This need can be a result of brand awareness or information requirement. Type-in traffic can be a significant source of traffic for established brands like CNN, New York Times and the BBC.

Social Bookmarking Traffic

This type of traffic results from websites being featured in popular social networking portals. Certain stories are popularized on these online voting arenas, resulting in massive influxes of traffic from social networking websites. Such traffic is usually not targeted, because users visit out of curiosity rather than a premeditated motive to acquire something.

Blog Traffic

Such traffic results from comments or trackbacks in blog posts. Users can post their links in relevant comments on blogs, causing others to visit their website.

Forum Traffic

Forum traffic results from relevant links in forum posts. Such traffic is usually relevant though does not always convert well.
