An internet rush to purchase domain names was in full swing yesterday when it was announced that thousands of new internet address endings were to be made available for purchase.
Requests for addresses released by the Internet Corporation for assigned names and numbers included names such as .ninja, .sex and .ferrari.
Some companies had actually applied for the same address endings too which will lead to an inevitable auction.
Some blue chip companies had objected to the process, whereas other had literally applied for hundreds of address string names.
Some of the most obvious choices were .google and .youtube but there was some other unusual inclusions such as .as, .boo and .dad.
Google also requested .music too which has been claimed by seven other organisations including Amazon.
Unsurprisingly the most contested name is .app which received 13 applications.
People have now been given up to seven months to lodge a complaint against any of the applications
Applicants had to pay £118,000 to take part in the application process including a minimum annual charge to keep their suffix once it had been granted
Here in the UK, the BBC were one organisation that applied to protect their brand by applying for the .BBC address string.

Interestingly some internet giants such as Facebook and Twitter didn’t apply for any address strings at all which some would say is a huge gamble.
